Choosing Gateway or Phone App to update your ESL?

In practical use, the main differences between updating prices on Bluetooth electronic shelf labels (ESLs) via gateways and Bluetooth smartphone apps are as follows:

Smartphone APP

 Gateway

1. Application Scenarios

  • Gateway Method
Gateways are suitable for large-scale deployments, such as supermarkets and warehouses. They cover all electronic labels within a certain range and enable price updates in bulk through a centralized management system.

  • Bluetooth Smartphone App Method
The app method is more suited for small-scale operations or scenarios requiring flexible price adjustments, such as small retail shops or temporary price changes. Staff can directly connect to individual labels via their smartphones for updates.

2. Operational Efficiency

  • Gateway Method
Gateways can simultaneously synchronize hundreds or thousands of labels, making it highly efficient for frequent or large-scale price updates.

  • Bluetooth Smartphone App Method
The app requires connecting to labels one by one, which is less efficient. When managing a large number of labels, the operation time can significantly increase.

3. Cost

  • Gateway Method
Deploying gateways requires additional hardware, resulting in higher initial investment. However, it is more cost-effective in the long run due to reduced labor costs, making it ideal for large-scale operations.

  • Bluetooth Smartphone App Method
The app method requires no additional hardware; only a smartphone is needed. It has a lower upfront cost, making it suitable for small businesses with limited budgets.

4. Flexibility

  • Gateway Method
Gateways are typically fixed installations with limited coverage range. Once deployed, their flexibility is relatively low.

  • Bluetooth Smartphone App Method
The app method is highly flexible and does not rely on fixed equipment. As long as a smartphone is available, prices can be updated, making it suitable for highly mobile or remote management needs.

5. System Integration

  • Gateway Method
Gateways are often deeply integrated with ERP or inventory management systems, making them ideal for businesses requiring real-time price and inventory synchronization.

  • Bluetooth Smartphone App Method
The app method operates more as a standalone solution and does not depend on large-scale system integration, making it suitable for small businesses with lower system requirements.

Summary

  • For large-scale, high-efficiency, centralized management of ESLs, the gateway method is more appropriate.

  • For low-cost, flexible, and small-scale operations, the Bluetooth smartphone app method is the better choice.
